What is Depression?

Are you feeling depressed? Did you know that the term “depression” or “depressed” is a common figure of speech that is used nationwide. Do you know the difference between depression and feeling sad? Sadness is a natural emotion that everyone experiences based upon their reaction to specific life events such as the death of a loved one. In contrast to, depression is a mental health condition where an individual will experience intense feelings of sadness for a longer duration in which the feelings cause impairment within at least one domain of life (social, occupational).

Did you know that there are six types of depressive disorders? The six types are Major Depressive Disorder, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Substance/Medication Induced Depressive Disorder, Depressed Disorder due to Another Medical Condition, and Other Unspecified or Specified Depressive Disorder. The most common symptoms of major depressive disorder include depressed mood, loss of interest/pleasure, weight loss/gain, insomnia/hypersomnia, psychomotor agitation, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, excessive/unhealthy feelings of guilt, decreased concentration and suicidal ideation. An individual must encounter at least five or more symptoms in the same two week period. The other five depressive disorders may vary by the duration of symptoms, diagnosed medical conditions, current medications, and intoxication from a substance. In addition, based upon a clinician’s professional opinion, an individual may not meet the full criteria of a depressive disorder or insufficient information could exist as well.
